Getting Crafty! Inexpensive Boho Bracelets

Tuesday, 31 July 2012

I was watching missglamorazzi's GIY Wrap Bracelet video the other day and I was inspired to start making my own bracelets again. I looked up some craft stores in my city (a surprising lack of them!) and then I hopped, skipped and danced my way down to one to snap up some materials.

Along with some old charms I had bought from Hong Kong last year, I incorporated missglamorazzi's braiding technique and came up with something a little unique!

From the craft store, I bought some craft cord, suede cord, gold beads and some bracelet closures. They're very inexpensive from craft stores or you can probably buy in bulk on ebay but you won't get the pleasure of seeing the sizes and colours in person.

I added those little star charms that I bought from Hong Kong last year and I think it turned out pretty well! I'm going to research some different ways of braiding the cord so I can make some more and stack them on my wrist!

I love this style of bracelet because you can mix and match them and stack them up with different styles! They would also make perfect gifts for friends or family! Because they are homemade, they will cost you a fraction of the price you would pay in the high street stores, plus you will have fun making them!

What do you think? Have you tried making your own bracelet's before?

Sunday Summary #13: A Wedding Edition

Sunday, 29 July 2012

This week I was away in North Berwick in Edinburgh for my cousin's wedding! If you follow me on Twitter (@ParisianOrchid) you will know that I stupidly didn't get any outfit photos so I'm going to snap some photos later this week for you :)

It was a long day that started at 7am for me as we had to drive 3 hours down to the ceremony but the location was a beauty as it was right on the coast of the Firth of Forth. It was great seeing all my extended family again and I was introduced to my new baby cousin whom is a beaut and a half! I obviously ate and drank far too much, hey ho! I haven't been dieting for 3 weeks for nothing!

The next day we went down to the 'Beauty Spot' of North Berwick and I snapped some lovely photos before we made the journey back up North. I also sampled some delicious North Berwick lobster and it was yummy in my tummy!

Can't believe that is July almost over! Where has the time gone? But I'm looking forward to the next few months as I will be down in London at the end of August and I start my new job at the beginning of September! 2012 has been fantastic so far!

What have you been up to this week?

P.S. Whilst reading Gillian's blog from elevatormusik, I found out that there is a Scottish blogger meet-up being planned for next month! Head over to Scottish Bloggers for more information if you are a Scottish blogger! I love this idea! As a fairly new blogger, I'd love the opportunity to meet with other bloggers and just have a little natter!

FOTD: Cinema Night

Wednesday, 25 July 2012

I really don't know how you gals manage to take photos for FOTD posts! I really struggled, so this is my best offering! But I promise that I will improve for next time! But anyway, let's get going!

I went to the cinema last night to see The Dark Knight Rises (my inner geek was so giddy!) and I decided to take inspiration for my make-up from Zooey Deschanel. I love Zooey Deschanel and her style but her make-up is always so simple and incorporates that oh so famous winged eyeliner with her doll-like eyes (cue beads of nervous sweat as I applied my eyeliner!).

Strangely enough, one of my eyelids is more mono-lid than the other so I always look lopsided when I apply eyeliner and I tried my oh so hardest to make them even! Luckily enough, I was going to be in a very dark room with my glasses on so this was really more for my benefit!

I really didn't go crazy with the make-up products but I hope I managed to capture even a little bit of Zooey Deschanel's infamous look!

What do you think? How do you fare with gel eyeliner?

The Liebster Blog Award

Monday, 23 July 2012

The other day, the beautiful Beth at Beauty Thrill nominated me for the Liebster Blog Award (go send her some love on her blog!) and this is such a great way for you to kind of get to know me better!

This is what happens – you get nominated, then you reply with your post, and tag other bloggers who have under 200 followers to do the same. Simples.

Rules:
1. You must link back to the person who gave the award to you!
2. Post eleven things about yourself
3. Answer the questions the person giving you the award has set for you.
4. Create 11 questions for the people to answer that you have given the award to.
5. Choose people to give the award to and link them in your post.
6. Go to their blog and tell them.
7. You can't give the award back to the blogger who gave it to you!

Let's get started!

11 Things About Me
1. I enjoy the simple things in life.
2. The first ever CD I bought was 'Steps' (still love them!)
3. I'm a real bookworm.
4. I often go to the cinema by myself.
5. I never completed the full 6 years of secondary school.

7. I speak Cantonese.
8. I play(ed) violin up to Grade 4/5 level.
9. I used to play for my university's netball team.
10. I would love to own a persian shorthair cat.
11. I'd love to InterRail around Europe sometime in my life.

11 Questions For Me To Answer
1. What is your favourite beauty brand?
Oh, this is difficult, there are so many brands that I like! There are some beauty brands that have products that are great and others not so much so my make-up bag is a real big mix!
2. What/where is your favourite place in the world?
I love Hong Kong when I go over to visit family, but I wouldn't want to live there permanently! Although I'm a city girl, it's too much of a city there! I also love Scotland, obviously!

I [heart] reading! I'm the only person in my family that actually reads books! I have several favourites: Pride & Prejudice, The Hunger Games Trilogy, Game of Thrones, One Day...
4. What sort of blogs/posts do you most enjoy?
I like reading lifestyle and beauty blogs as well as baking blogs! I love reviews because I trust the blogger's opinion more than reading about a specific product in a magazine where their opinion could be tainted.
5. If you could have any hairstyle, what would it be?
Long hair with natural beachy waves *sigh*
6. What is your dream job?
Either a criminal solicitor or doing litigation work in court. Or any kind of court work!
7. What other hobbies do you have other than blogging?
I love baking, photography, reading, playing music...the usual :)
8. What is your favourite make-up look?
The natural no make-up look. Just a light layer of foundation, blush, concealer and a quick lick of mascara!
9. What is your least favourite make-up look or trend?
Bright neon eyeshadow! Something about bright colours weird me out!
10. What does your ideal Saturday night consist of?
A huge pile of DVDs to get through, a take-out and junk food galore. Oh and someone to cuddle with of course!
11. What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Over-thinker, funny and passionate

11 Questions For You To Answer
1. What made you start blogging?

Sunday Summary #12: Changing Times

Sunday, 22 July 2012

Source
So you might have noticed a few changes going around on my blog, namely the name of my blog! I have been thinking a lot about my blog lately and I decided that I wanted to change the name now rather than later. Although I loved 'A Thoughtful Sunday Blog', it just wasn't a name that I was happy enough telling people about and with it being one of the most important parts of a blog, it needed a lovely new over-haul! So, introducing 'Parisian Orchid'!

I've spent the best part of today changing things over, getting a new email address, making a new banner (for the interim) etc. and although I've tried my very hardest to change everything...some things still carry the 'A Thoughtful Sunday Blog' title so bear with me whilst I under-go some construction work!

I thought it would be nice to let you know about these changes as if you don't follow me on Twitter (@ParisianOrchid), you would have been very freaked out indeed!

So what do you think of the new name?

I hope you're all having a delightful Sunday!

Joliebox: July 2012 Edition

Friday, 20 July 2012

Feels like yesterday that everyone was raging at Joliebox for the late delivery of the June box but July's box came as a surprise as I hadn't even had an email telling me the July box had been dispatched. I love surprises like that!

I (somehow) managed to avoid any spoilers as to what was in this month's box as the 'bigger beauty bloggers' always seem to get their's a week or so in advance and I always can't help myself to take a sneaky peek! But this month, I actually 'oooooh-d' when I opened the drawstring bag! Big thumbs up!

So...what did I get this month? (Again, please don't read any further if you don't want any spoilers!)

Etat Pur Biomimetic Skincare B-09 Express Purifying Mask
'This intensive mask purifies the skin by absorbing toxins, impurities and excess sebum in the skin'
I was literally thinking this morning that I wanted to try using face masks in with my skincare routine and this really hasn't come at a better time. Can't wait to try it!

Jane Iredale  Tantasia Self Tanner
'A moisturising gradual self-tanner for the face and body that provides instant, healthy looking colour'
First off, I don't use self-tan so this product is pretty void for me but even if I did, it's the tiniest sample ever! Not quite sure how long it'd last you.

Nailgirls Two mini-polishes from the Medal Collection, inspired by the Olympics
'Gold, Bronze or Silver, these metallic polishes are sure to get you noticed this summer'
I'm so glad that Joliebox included 2 mini polishes rather than one big one. Who actually manages to get through an entire bottle? I got gold and bronze, can't go wrong with nail polish!

Wen by Caz Dean Sweet Almond and Mint Cleansing Conditioner
'Bursting with natural herbs and botanicals, this single-step cleansing conditioner leaves hair looking and feeling deeply cleansed and nourished at the same time'
Okay, this was actually the product that made me smile the most. I'm a bit obsessed with haircare products and if you don't know by know, I love mint so this is right up my street! Not sure how I feel about the 'single-step' idea but I'm willing to give it a go!

SPECIAL EXTRA
KMS California Free Shape Hot Flex Spray
So as an apology from Joliebox for the late delivery of last months box, they included a little something extra. I'm glad they've taken the time and effort to address the situation and trying to make up for it by throwing in something extra so...greatly appreciated at this end!

I was considering cancelling my subscription after this month but now that I have this month's box, I'm kind of re-considering. It's actually a pretty brilliant box and I'm quite excited to give the products a try. You have a hold of me this time Joliebox! Keep it up!

What did you get in this month's box?

Review: Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray

Tuesday, 17 July 2012

I had been eyeing up this product for the longest time ever and when I got wind of it on Buyapowa, I re-assessed my bank account and joined in with the co-buy! This is 'salt-infused styling for fullness, hold and a cool, matte finish'. So in all sense of a word...it's a salt spray.

You know that feeling when you have a swim in the ocean and your hair just naturally makes you look like a surfer girl? Well, this is supposed to re-create that look all in the comfort of your own home and no bikini diet in sight! Whilst researching this product I found that there was a lack of instructions as to what you actually do with it (although the packaging states to 'spray evenly on damp or dry hair. Style and let dry or use a diffuser'.) So I tried this product on both damp and dry hair to get a feel of how it works. On damp hair, I just sprayed it through my hair and scrunched the living daylights out of it whilst it was drying. On dry hair, I just sprayed it through my hair and again, scrunched like I had never scrunched before! The results? There was definite volume in my hair and it had a matte feeling to it exactly as if I had been swimming in the ocean. I was hopeful that it would create some beachy waves but I fear that my hair is far too stubborn and straight for that! I would prefer to spray it on dry hair as I felt I was in a little more control of it rather than leaving it to dry whilst damp.

Is it worth the £19.50 RRP? I would reluctantly say yes, but as I bought it from Buyapowa, I feel the £12.50 I paid for it is the better price. There are now (as I am lead to believe) cheaper 'high street' alternatives to the famous salt sprays! If you have naturally gorgeous waves in your hair then this will certainly enhance them and if not, it is worth buying just for the beautiful volume and matte finish you'll get once you use it.

You can buy this from all Bumble & Bumble stockists or on their website.

What do you think? Have you ever used this before?

Sunday Summary #11: Graduation Edition

Sunday, 15 July 2012

Well here I am, another postgraduate being thrown out into the big bad world!

If you don't follow me on Twitter (@thoughtsunday), then you wouldn't know that I graduated on Wednesday! There was a big hoo-hah as to what time we were actually graduating because the university decided to change the time one week before the ceremony but the website hadn't been amended yet. Cue, the mass confusion amongst the Diploma students! But it was all finally fixed and I had a great day! The ceremony itself was in the big theatre in my city where all the musical theatre shows are held. I was really nervous beforehand (strangely enough) but me and my friends made it through the ceremony without any big hiccups! It was definitely a non-stop day and had only about an hour to myself!

Mr. Sun certainly did not have his hat on like last year but it was great seeing everyone again and catching up on the few months we hadn't seen each other. I then went out for dinner to a hotel restaurant I had been wanting to try out and the meal was good! Not great, but still delicious! As I wasn't going to my graduation ball this year, some people had decided to go out for a few drinks and a dance or two at our student union so it was great seeing those who didn't go to the ceremony.

It feels like such a big end of an era! I enjoy studying and the academia part of my life and I do certainly miss it now that I'm not in education anymore. Wednesday did really set it in stone that I do want to be a solicitor and although it isn't going to happen to me right now, I know that my time will come! So for now, I will put to good use any opportunities that come my way in the vain hope that it will lead me down the path of law.

P.S...So after having a few days to think about the direction of my blog, I have decided to stop doing my 'Sunday Summaries' as I know a lot of bloggers do this and the end of the week certainly becomes saturated with these types of posts! I will be doing the odd update every now and then where I will have 'editions' quite like this one, I have really enjoyed doing this type of post so you never know, it might make a comeback soon!

Palette Series: Urban Decay Naked Palette

Saturday, 14 July 2012

If you have managed to get along so far without coming across this palette then you must have been living in a cave! It is that ever hyped-up Naked Palette!

Packed with 12 beautifully neutral shades, it is a wonderfully wearable palette that can create so many different looks for night and day!

As with all UD eyeshadows, they are wonderfully pigmented and the colour pay-off is fantastic! My favourite ones has to be Buck, Toasted and Hustle (but not necessarily all together!). There are some shades that I haven't touched or even attempted to experiment with but maybe one day I'll branch out and give some of the other ones a go.

As the Naked Palette was so popular, it wasn't surprising that UD released the Naked 2 Palette soon after. Although they contain completely different shades, I can't help but feel that I don't need any more neutral shades in my life so I have yet to invest into it.

This palette is slightly on the more expensive side at £36.00 at UD stockists but breaking it down to numbers, it comes to about £3 per eyeshadow and they are of great quality and in a handy palette. If you think about it, one MAC eyeshadow will set you back at least £9! I think that it is really worth the money you pay for it and if you don't own either the original or the Naked 2 palette, I would seriously consider investing in at least on of them.

What do you think? Do you own this palette or the Naked 2? Which shades are your favourite?

Where I have been the past few days...

Friday, 13 July 2012

Source
Hello!

I feel like I owe you all a little post about where I've been the last few days (although you probably don't think I need to!) Since I started this blog, I've have made a conscious effort to post regularly and basically to always have a presence on here. But the last few days has been physically and mentally draining what with me graduating the other day (which I will be doing a separate post on) and just spending time with family and friends but I've been finding it more and more difficult to make my fingers type out what I'm thinking. I've got several posts saved on draft and I've just been getting the feeling that everything I write isn't worth clicking the 'publish' button yet.

I hope you understand the intermission on my blog and that I've really needed the last few days (and hopefully not too many in the future!) to kind of re-boot my brain! I have some great posts lined up and a small giveaway as I am coming up to 50 followers across GFC and HelloCotton!

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to you all for sticking with me!

Review: Garnier 2 in 1 Tinted Eye Roll-on

Tuesday, 10 July 2012

I am a huge sufferer of dark circles and if I don't get an adequate amount of my beauty sleep, you can definitely tell through my dull under-eye circles! I decided to invest some of my hard earned pennies into the Garnier tinted eye roll-on to try and make me look more alive!

I picked up the shade 03 Medium which actually matches my skintone really well! It has the same elements as the standard Garnier eye roll-on but with the added benefit of a tinted concealer. At first,  was slightly dubious of applying caffeine under my eyes but I was pleasantly surprised as to how refreshing and brightening it made my eyes.

I simply apply this as I would an under eye concealer and pat it gently under my eyes (being careful not to tug on the eyes!). I found it to be quite a 'liquidy' product that doesn't have the particular thickness that a concealer might have but it doesn't bother me. The 'cool' feel of the roller ball added to the experience of using the product (if that makes any sense!) and it had that 'oooh, I'm awake now' result. It doesn't accentuate any lines that I may have and I set it with a little dusting of MAC MSF Natural. It just sits there happily all day; I can't actually tell you how long the wear lasts for so a small touch-up may be required if you are out and about for long periods of time.

This is available in 2 different shades and claims to adapt perfectly to your skintone. I bought this on offer from Superdrug at £5.09 but it retails at £10.20. If you keep an eye out, Superdrug usually does some great deals and you can end up picking up a bargain!

Have you used this before? What do you think of it?

Review: Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain

Monday, 9 July 2012

Oh Revlon, you are fast becoming my favourite drugstore brand! The Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains have finally made it's way across the pond to the UK! Again, we are only getting a few select shades rather than the entire collection (no surprise there then!) But the one I have to review for you is shade 001 Honey.

They have been compared to the Clinque Chubby Sticks but unfortunately I have never tried the Clinque Chubby Sticks so I can't give you a direct comparison but from what I've seen in the stores and several blog reviews, there is not much difference between them (except the price!). The balm itself is very glossy and I found the application of them was really easy. The pointed tip of the balm stain likened to just colouring in your lips! To get more product, you can simply twist the silver bit at the bottom and it twists up like a lipstick almost.

Now the colour, I swatched all the shades that were available in Superdrug and I deduced that Honey would be the one that I would wear most often. It's a very nice nudey-pink colour and when I applied it onto my lips, it was like 'my lips, but better'! One point I have to say about this is that it has a minty, polo mint type scent which I found strange because I thought it would have had a vanilla scent. But it doesn't bother me because I (heart) minty scents but some people might be put off by that.

These are available in Superdrug now for an introductory offer of £5.99 each or at Boots on 3 for 2 offer but at £7.99 each. Depending on how many you plan to get, there are great deals on them just now!

What do you think? Are they the poor girl's Chubby Stick? Which shade is your favourite?

Sunday Summary #10

Sunday, 8 July 2012

Follow me on Instagram: fong_wingsee
001. The picture above are the three different dresses I have bought in the past few weeks. I really don't think I need that many dresses but they're all so pretty (and in the sale!) that I really couldn't pass them up! Plus, I'm sure I'll find an occasion to wear them. My bank account is suffering a lot right now though!

002. I've been thinking a lot about my blog and what I can do to make it more 'me'. Possibly a unique type of post or a bit of a 'blog re-vamp'? If you're very technological and would love to give me a hand, then I would be greatly appreciated!

003. Whilst sitting here and trying to think about what I've done this week...it seems that I haven't really done much with my time. I finally went for my 'medical assessment' for my new job in which the results should come through next week then fingers crossed everything goes to plan, I can start my training at the end of the month!

Other than that, I'm getting excited about this week as I have a 'pre-wedding big family meal' and GRADUATION! I'm rather looking forward to it!

What have you been up to this week?

£100 ASOS Challenge

Saturday, 7 July 2012

Dress | Shoes | Bag

I've seen the £100 ASOS Challenge making the rounds around the blogger-sphere so I thought that I'd participate. Even if I don't win, I managed to find a way to make these collage type posts! Yay!

I'm really into the whole cream/white colour this season (maybe it reminds me of weddings...I do love a good wedding me!) and this sequinned daisy dress emulates summer and all things girly to me! The floaty skirt is really flattering and brings out the old romantic in me! To go with the dress, I picked some nice nude pink heeled shoes, just to keep things a little simple. Not sure how long I'd last in them but I find that heeled shoes improve my posture drastically and makes me feel that little but more lady-like. Lastly, I chose this small tan weave bag just to complete the outfit. You can wear this across the body or just on the one shoulder to keep all your precious items in! The tan colour really goes well with the tone of the dress and the shoes without being too over-bearing. I prefer small bags like this as it can usually carry more things in it than a clutch, and who wants to hold on to something all night?

So that's my little simple outfit! Nothing too crazy but I think this is such an elegant outfit.

What do you think? Will you be doing this challenge?

Joliebox: June Edition

Friday, 6 July 2012

I feel like I've waited an eternity for this box and it's somewhat true! This is my first Joliebox and after reading such great reviews on them...I decided that this was the beauty box for me! Joliebox have had some problems with the delivery of their June boxes so I only received mine this morning (it's July now...just FYI). But I'm going to do a separate post on my thoughts on the 'beauty box' phenomenon! Please don't read any further if you don't want any spoilers because I'd hate to ruin it for you if you haven't received yours yet!

The first thing I noticed about the box was that it's a lot smaller than I thought it would be, but I guess that isn't at all a bad thing. The design of the box is so pretty! I did prefer this one to the other orange one they did and the little drawstring bag inside will come in so useful!

 Elysambre Lipstick
If I'm quite honest, I'm not sure if I would like to use this as a lipstick. It's a muddy brown colour with what looks like subtle shimmer in it. I'll give it a go anyway but it's not a standout item to me.

 Institut Esthederm UV inCellium Spray
This looks promising! It says it's 'a pre-tanning treatment which will boost skin's natural defences and ensure a long-lasting tan'. I'm sure once Mr Sun decides to put his hat on again, I'll be sure to try this out!
 L'Occitane Angelica Hydration Cream
I think this is the most exciting item in the box! I've always wanted to try L'Occitane skincare products. It's a really nice sample size so hopefully I can work it into my skincare routine.
Yon-Ka Pamplemousse Protective and Vitalizing Cream
Now this was supposed to be the customised product if you managed to fill in your beauty profile online but due to the labelling issues that delayed the delivery of our boxes, I got a different customised item. This is for Normal to Oily skin BUT recently I've been feeling like my skin has gotten more oily so maybe I will give this a go and if it doesn't work out, I'm sure MummyTron would welcome it with open arms!

Overall, I'm fairly happy with Joliebox's 1st Anniversary box. There are some really nice skincare items in there and the box design is really cute. My payment has already been processed for July's box so I'm going to wait until that arrives before I make an overall opinion on the Joliebox beauty subscription. I hope they do something special for the subscribers that had to wait a very long time for it to arrive as I got a very bad vibe from the subscribers commenting on Joliebox's Facebook thread.

Joliebox costs £10 per month + £2.95 delivery.

What do you think of this month's box? Did you have to wait a long time for it too?

TAG! Shhhh! 10 Little Secrets!

Wednesday, 4 July 2012

I've seen this tag circulating the YouTube world and I always love a chance to be a little bit nosey! I thought I'd write this down in blog form and share with you a little something from my life.

Source
1. What is one product that makes you feel like a million dollars?
Lipbalm...? As silly as it sounds! My lips are pretty big and I always feel self conscience if they're chapped so lipbalm always makes me feel better.

2. What is your skincare secret?
I don't really have a specific skincare secret but I always follow my skincare routine meticulously! But I would say moisturiser is a key part of any skincare routine.

3. Share your haircare secret?
I don't do much with my hair except to try and keep it under control! But I would say a heat protectant...it's so important when using heated appliances on your hair.

4. What is your biggest diet rule?
Everything in moderation! I have been through a gazillion diets and I found that everything in moderation is the best. Diets come and go but just keeping balanced diet is the best rule.

5. Any workout tips?
Just to vary your workout as much as possible. Your body will become used to you going on  the same workout machines every time you hit the gym so just vary it a little. And also to take advantage of the great outdoors by running outside. As much as I love the treadmill and the safety of a steady pace, you can't beat some outdoor running.

6. Which perfume is your secret weapon?
I'm not the kind of girl to have 10 different perfumes on the go but my signature scent is Daisy by Marc Jacobs :)

7. Show us a clothing item of yours which always turns heads.
I wish I was confident enough to say that an item of clothing always turns heads! But I'm most confident in tea dresses and pretty girly clothing, but unfortunately I'm often stuck in a plain top, jeans and converse rut!

8. What is your most treasured piece of jewellery?
A ruby cross necklace that my Gran gave to my Mum and then she gave it to me. I don't wear it as much as I would like but it's something special to me so as long as I know it's there, it's enough to me!

9. Who is your style crush?
Zooey Deschanel. She just has that effortless 'girl next door' look about her. Beautiful lady :)

10. Tell us something we don't know about you.
My dream is to open my own bakery.

I tag YOU to do this and leave me a link to your blog post in the comments so I can be a little nosey!
